The Hidden Cost of Avoiding Our Feelings

In today’s fast-paced world, many of us are constantly busy. We scroll through social media, binge-watch TV shows, or throw ourselves into work. But have you ever stopped to wonder—are we keeping busy, or are we avoiding something?

One of the biggest problems with mental health today is that many people push their feelings aside instead of facing them. When we feel sad, stressed, or overwhelmed, it’s easier to distract ourselves than to deal with those emotions. We might grab our phone, turn on Netflix, or keep working late. These distractions give temporary relief, but they don’t actually make the feelings go away. Instead, the emotions pile up over time, making us feel even worse in the long run.

Think of emotions like waves in the ocean. If we don’t let them come and go naturally, they build up like a storm. Eventually, they have to crash down. That’s why avoiding our feelings can lead to anxiety, burnout, and even physical health problems.

So, what can we do? The first step is to notice when we are avoiding our emotions. Instead of reaching for a distraction, take a moment to check in with yourself. Ask, "What am I feeling right now?" and give yourself permission to sit with that feeling, even if it’s uncomfortable. Journaling, deep breathing, or talking to someone we trust can help us process our emotions in a healthy way.

It’s okay to feel sad, angry, or stressed. Emotions are not the enemy. The more we acknowledge them, the less power they have over us. By facing our feelings instead of running from them, we can build true emotional strength and well-being.

Just like emotions, waves rise and fall. Allow them to move through you, rather than resisting. 🌊
